| WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is proposing deep cuts to some big weapons programs such as the F-22 fighter jet as the Pentagon takes a hard look at how it spends money. Gates announced a broad range of cuts Monday to weapons spending, saying he plans to cut programs ranging from a new helicopter for the president to ending production of the $140 billion F-22 fighter jet. The Army's modernization program would be scaled back, while a new satellite system and a search-and-rescue helicopter would be cut. In a meeting with the editorial board of The Standard-Times, Rep. Frank, D-Mass., also called for a 25 percent cut in military spending, saying the Pentagon...... President Obama asked for a 10% cut. On March 4, China's National People's Congress announced that it would increase the country's military budget 17.8 percent in 2007 to a total of $45 billion.[1] Despite the fact that this was the biggest single annual increase in China's military spending,[2] the Chinese government reassured the world that this spending hike was normal and need not worry anyone. "China is committed to taking a path of peaceful development and it pursues a defensive military posture," a spokesman said.[3] But the evidence suggests instead that China's intent is to challenge the United States as a military superpower. BEIJING, March 4 (RIA Novosti) - China plans to raise defense spending to $58.7 billion in 2008, up by 17.6% year-on-year, a National People's Congress (NPC) spokesman said on Tuesday. What are they thinking about? China is increasing their spending on the military and we are decreasing spending. Something I saw coming when we have Democrats in control. I bet China and Russia were waiting for the Democrats to come to power. Weak! Again I am waiting for China to invade Taiwan. That will be the telling moment. The world will see us as weak. And we will do nothing to help our Allies. |
