  U.S. jobless rate rises to 7.9%; economy adds 171,000 jobs

The nation’s unemployment rate inched up to 7.9 percent in October, while 171,000 job were created, the U.S. Labor Department reported Friday.

Leading industry gainers included health care, retail and professional and business services, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said in a news release.
There were 578,000 more people who were either working or looking for work in October, as the labor force grew to 155.6 million. The number of unemployed workers was about the same as in September — 12.3 million.
The U.S. jobless rate was 7.8 percent for September.
