Aides to President Barack Obama are putting the final touches on a new strategy to help Democrats recover from a brutal August recess by specifying what Obama wants to see in a compromise health care deal and directly confronting other trouble spots, West Wing officials tell POLITICO.
Obama is considering detailing his health-care demands in a major speech as soon as next week, when Congress returns from the August recess. And although House leaders have said their members will demand the inclusion of a public insurance option, Obama has no plans to insist on it himself, the officials said.
“We’re entering a new season,” senior adviser David Axelrod said in a telephone interview. “It’s time to synthesize and harmonize these strands and get this done. We’re confident that we can do that. But obviously it is a different phase. We’re going to approach it in a different way. The president is going to be very active.”
Top officials privately concede the past six weeks have taken their toll on
Obama's popularity. But the officials also see the new diminished expectations as an
opportunity to prove their critics wrong by signing a health-care law, showing progress in Afghanistan, and using this month's anniversary of the fall of Lehman Brothers to push for a crackdown on Wall Street.
On health care, Obama’s willingness to forgo the public option is sure to anger his party’s liberal base. But some administration officials welcome a showdown with liberal lawmakers if they argue they would rather have no health care law than an incremental one. The confrontation would allow Obama to show he is willing to stare down his own party to get things done.
“We have been saying all along that the most important part of this debate is not the public option, but rather ensuring choice and competition,” an aide said. “There are lots of different ways to get there.”

Kliphnote:
The problem with the "Public Option" is: Why would any employer pay for Health insurance for their employees if the Government will pay for it?
Eventually there would be no employer payed health insurance. That is what some people want. Mostly Liberals.
They think the Health Insurance industry is a greedy for profit only business.
Is that not what a business is supposed to do, make a profit.
According to Obama, part of the reason for the high cost of health care is because of the greedy insurance company's.
A few weeks ago it was the greedy Doctors. Preforming unnecessary procedures.
- We can't measure our health care by our life expectancy or infant mortality.
The life style in this country is not the same as other country's.
And the abortion rate and reason are different than other country's.
Perhaps we should tax bad habits.
Lets tax smoking, Why not just make it illegal?
Lets tax bad food. Why not make it illegal?
You know why it's not illegal?
Because they are making money off of bad habits.
Why not make those in poor physical shape pay more in taxes?
- We could go by age....20 sit-ups and 20 push-ups.
If you can't do that you may be costing the government (tax payer) heath care more money. So you would be taxed more. It's only fair.
The taxes would be used to fund the government health care.
The health insurance industry would go out of business, for the most part.
We may still have private health insurance for those that want it, if that were legal.
You wouldn't need Medicare or Medicaid if you had a Government run health care.
Let me state this again, I think EVERYONE should have health care.
I just don't want the government running my health care.
