Upstate secessionists ramp up efforts ahead of Democratic takeover of Legislature

With Democrats poised to take control of the state Senate — with up to a 17-seat margin — upstate New York secessionists, who have pushed for New York to be divided into autonomous regions, are trying to drum up support for their idea of a two- or three-part state.
Divide NYS, which is critical of what it perceives as a downstate-focused state government, is asking its supporters to press local town and county officials to sign a resolution in favor of creating a “New Amsterdam.”
